The Anterior Paraventricular Thalamus Modulates Light- Induced Phase Shifts in Circadian Rhythmicity in Rats

چکیده
SUMMARY The reciprocal connections between the paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) and the suprachiasmatic nuclei suggest that PVT may participate in the regulation of circadian rhythms. We studied in rats the effect of lesions of the anterior and mid-posterior regions of the PVT on phase shifts of drinking circadian rhythm induced by light pulses at circadian times 6, 12 and 23, as well as the phase shifts produced by electrical or glutamatergic stimulation of the anterior PVT at the same circadian times. Lesion of the anterior PVT abolishes the advances induced by light during late subjective night, while mid-posterior PVT lesions did not affect the phase shifts. Electrical stimulation or glutamate injections in the anterior PVT mimic the phase shifting effects of light pulses. These results indicate the participation of the anterior PVT as a modulator of entrainment of circadian rhythms to light.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in mammals is the master clock which regulates circadian rhythms. Neural activity of SCN neurons is synchronized to external light through the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT). The paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) is a neural structure that receives synaptic inputs from, and projects back to, the SCN. Lesioning the anterior PVT (aPVT) modifies the behaviora...

This study determined the effect of age on the efficacy of melatonin treatment to phase shift circadian activity rhythms and on melatonin receptor expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVNT) of C3H/HeN mice. The circadian rhythm of 2-[125I]iodomelatonin binding, assessed at three times of the day [circadian times (CT) 2, 10, and 18], showed...

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the mammalian hypothalamus has been referred to as the master circadian pacemaker that drives daily rhythms in behavior and physiology. There is, however, evidence for extra-SCN circadian oscillators. Neural tissues cultured from rats carrying the Per-luciferase transgene were used to monitor the intrinsic Per1 expression patterns in different brain areas an...
متن کاملDissociation between Circadian Per1 and Neuronal and Behavioral Rhythms Following a Shifted Environmental Cycle
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus contains a major circadian pacemaker that imposes or entrains rhythmicity on other structures by generating a circadian pattern in electrical activity. The identification of "clock genes" within the SCN and the ability to dynamically measure their rhythmicity by using transgenic animals open up new opportunities to study the relatio...
